Halifax, Nova Scotia – Team Canada emerged victorious from the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship, defeating Sweden 4-3 in an electrifying final at the Scotiabank Centre. In a rematch of the 2023 gold medal game, the Canadians showcased their resilience and determination to reclaim the title on home ice.

The game started at a frenetic pace, with both teams trading chances in the opening minutes. Canada drew first blood at 6:32 of the first period when Connor Bedard, the tournament’s leading scorer, buried a wrist shot past Swedish goaltender Jesper Wallstedt.

Sweden responded quickly, tying the game just two minutes later on a power play goal by William Eklund. The Swedes continued to press in the second period, taking a 2-1 lead on a goal by Fabian Lysell at 12:42.

However, Canada refused to be deterred. Just over two minutes later, Shane Wright knotted the game at 2-2 with a backhand shot from the slot. The Canadians took the lead for good at 17:35 of the second period when Bedard scored his second goal of the night, a laser beam from the top of the circle.

Sweden came out with renewed determination in the third period, and they tied the game once again at 3-3 on a goal by Simon Edvinsson at 5:42. But the Canadians had the final say. With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Logan Cooley scored the game-winning goal, a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle that found its way through traffic.

Wallstedt was outstanding in goal for Sweden, making 35 saves on 39 shots. However, Canadian goaltender Benjamin Gaudreau was equally impressive, stopping 27 of 30 shots.

Bedard was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading all scorers with 14 goals and 13 assists in seven games. He also set a new World Juniors record for most points in a single tournament.

Canada’s victory marked their 19th gold medal at the World Juniors, extending their lead as the most successful nation in tournament history. Sweden settled for silver, while the Czech Republic claimed bronze with a 5-2 victory over the United States in the third-place game.

The 2025 World Juniors was a memorable tournament that showcased the best young hockey talent in the world. The games were competitive, the atmosphere was electric, and the memories will last a lifetime.
